ABOUT THE PROJECT
Tanzania has one of the highest rates of deforestation in the world, one of the lowest GDPs per capita at just $1,700 and it is estimated that inhabitants in rural communities spend 12-18% of their income on domestic energy alone, resulting in some women having to walk for more than 1km to find sources of wood, or pay the people who do so. In addition to this, rural parts of Tanzania are critically affected by respiratory diseases because they are inhaling toxic emissions, namely carbon monoxide and dioxide, produced by their current cooking methods.
With approximately 20,000 people dying of indoor air pollution in Tanzania every year, more than half of which are children, this is a global health issue that must be dealt with.Women are often poorly represented in their community and as they are already busy with household chores and farming work, they do not always have the opportunity to contribute to the household income.
OUR GOAL
To Help Those In Need
At LightMountain we aim to provide a cleaner, safer and cheaper cooking alternative, the clean cookstove. This low-smoke stove reduces toxic emissions by 80% and fuel consumption by 60%, allowing users to save money and protect their health.
To make this technology affordable to the poorest and most remote communities, we empower local women to undertake a part time job and become entrepreneurs in their communities. They sell the cookstoves through a microfinance plan, while generating a small but significant profit which can eventually allow them to develop their own business or send their children to school.
In partnership with a local NGO, we provide these women with entrepreneurial training and teach them about microfinance, marketing and savings.Through this simple but inclusive solution, LightMountain therefore aims at answering an environmental urge, a global health issue and financial insecurity, while empowering women to achieve their entrepreneurial abilities.
